They were made of logs and had upper floors that soldiers could shoot downward from. They were lookouts and the last line of defense at the fort.
Today, you can visit a historically accurate reconstructed blockhouse that also functions as a museum, called the Oliver Stevens Blockhouse. Inside the museum, you can find excavated artifacts that were from the original fort site. There are also tools, weapons, and other everyday items from the 1700s when the fort was built. The museum also displays information about Native American presence in the areas, early settlers and soldiers, and the history that followed.
